Slow CD / DVD Burning on Dell D820

Tagged with: — ondrej at 9:53 pm on Wednesday, December 27, 2006

Larry the CowI burned a DVD on my laptop, but it took ages :( The speed was between 0.5 – 1.3x; should be 8x. Arrrgh…
I was not able to enable DMA for the writer (TS-L632D). Fortunately I found a page with a solution.

It is necessary to add a boot parameter combined_mode=libata. After this, my writer appears as a SCSI device (/dev/sr0 instead of /dev/hdc). It was necessary to update the /etc/fstab file, a kde’s link to device for the writer and update a configuration for my burning software.
And the result? The speed is between 4-7x, that is 11 minutes instead of one hour.

Hi, I have a Dell 620 – I’d run into the same issue, and I’ve taken the route of removing ata support altogether, and enabling scsi cdrom support. Works quite well. I’d followed the instructions here: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-436869-highlight-dell.html

Hi Vivek,

Thanks for the link, with a newer version of kernel I will try it.
